Gilmore filed false information on campaign disclosure forms
RICHMOND -- Former Virginia governor James S. Gilmore III, the state's Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, submitted false information on two financial disclosure forms that hid his ties to a government contractor embroiled in a legal dispute over allegations that two of its executives had conspired to defraud the federal government. On the forms, the first filed in June 2007 for his presidential campaign and the second in May after he joined the U.S. Senate race, Gilmore said he was on the board of Windmill International. Gilmore, who signed his name attesting that the information on the forms was "complete and correct," reported that Windmill International was based in Nashua, N.H.

Stage Set for Barack Obama to Take Germany by Storm
41 minutes ago · Berlin police Thursday prepared for a crowd of a million expected to turn up to hear Barack Obama’s speech. While they felt fit to fend off unfriendly behavior, German enthusiasm for the US senator kept them guessing. Bunches of air balloons bearing the image of Barrack Obama have been pinned to the lampposts along the June 17 boulevard. The lawn in the neighboring Tiergarten park has been freshly mowed, and two giant video screens have been set up to give latecomers a chance to catch a glimp

Stringbean's killer may be freed
54 minutes ago · John A. Brown's freedom was on the line when a parole board member asked him this question: "They say the woman who was killed that night was running away, and someone chased her down and shot her. Was that you?'' Brown took a deep breath. "They say it was," he said, "and I have to admit to it." Brown said he does not remember what happened the night that Dave "Stringbean" Akeman, a Grand Ole Opry and Hee-Haw television star, and his wife, Estelle, were killed by intruders at their Ridg

BREAKING NEWS: Existing-home sales drop 2.6% in June, more than double expected amount
1 hour ago · WASHINGTON - Sales of existing homes fell more sharply than expected in June as the housing industry continued to be bruised by the worst slump in more than two decades. The National Association of Realtors reported that sales dropped by 2.6 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.86 million units. That was more than double the decline that had been expected and left sales 15.5 percent below where they were a year ago. The downward slide in sales depressed prices, too.

Jobless claims surge as companies retrench
2 hours ago · WASHINGTON - The number of newly laid off people filing claims for unemployment benefits bolted past 400,000 last week as companies trimmed their work forces to cope with a slowing economy. The Labor Department reported Thursday that the number of new applications filed for these benefits rose by a seasonally adjusted 34,000 to 406,000 for the week ending July 19. That matched the level seen in late March. The last time claims were higher was after the devastation of the Gulf Coast hurrica

Jul 20 · You just thought you heard it was going to happen. See, things are not always as they seem. Not at all. There will only be some very limited recounts...no real complete recounts at all. Amazing how they made you think that would happen. You know how they rammed the through..saying it included a paper trail...why have a paper trail if you don't get to recount? Wasn't the part of the deal? I guess not. Steve Geller: "In addition, while our amendments failed, we as Democrats v

Jul 24 · After a decade of being clean and sober (clean of watching the TV “news”, and sober enough to realize it is no longer anything even remotely resembling news coverage), I recently fell off the wagon – well, not so much fell off as jumped off, intrigued by the current temper tantrums that you and your colleagues are engaging in on a nightly basis. Not surprisingly, it is quickly becoming the stuff of legend. “The media is in the tank for Obama.” Your words – words broadcast on an alleged “new

Jul 23 · This is an amazing story about the Alaska Democratic party. They must feel that although the odds are great...there is hope from the players that Dean installed and that Obama is continuing. Vic Fischer's history as a Democrat in Alaska reaches back to before Alaskans could vote for president, when he was a delegate to the state's Constitutional Convention in 1955 and 1956. It's been a hard slog since then. In 1964, Alaska went for Lyndon Johnson, who won all but six states. That's it i

Jul 23 · In Andrea Miller Virginia's fourth Congressional district has the opportunity to replace a Cheney Republican with a real progressive, and the first African American our state would ever have chosen to represent us in Congress. Here's a race that can make a difference not just in the head-count for the two increasingly indistinguishable parties, but in what actually happens in Washington. I know Andrea. She's a leader and she pulls no punches. She would energize the progressive caucus and

Jul 22 · Damn, this is just totally amazing. Obama, through calm, cool, dignified statesmanship has completely caused McCain's button to be pushed. And not just the button that gets his temper boiling, but rather, the button that causes him to make a fatal campaign gaffe. Ever since Obama has gone abroad to meet with Maliki, Karzai, Petraeus, and other country leaders and statesmen, he has done everything right. It's been great. And it's bothered McCain, extremely. And McCain has suffered gaffe a

Jul 22 · The Fifth District of Virginia, and anyone nearby who can lend a hand, should do everything possible to elect Tom Perriello to Congress this year. The most important reason to do so is to replace Virgil Goode. Back in April I interviewed Perriello for an hour on his campaign platform. You can listen to the interview here: I was underwhelmed. I wanted to know his positions on key issues. He wanted to avoid specifics. I wanted to know what he would do if elected. He wanted to talk

Jul 22 · Last winter, I wrote two journals about the current administration's crimes. The first was a very straightforward piece, based upon an essay which Chomsky wrote in 1973. Briefly, he suggested that Watergate became a national scandal, because Nixon violated the unspoken rule that presidents were allowed to persecute minorities, the poor, political extremists and other marginalized people who threaten the business establishment. But once the dirty tricksters created an Enemies Lists that include

Jul 21 · Howard Dean's tour of the South is not getting that much attention, but I did find a couple of articles about his trips to MS and LA. I have not seen national coverage of it, but then I have not been watching the TV as it sounds so inane. I thought I would find more on a Google blog search, but I gave up on that. It is mostly PUMA type blogs attacking Dean. How in the world do they alway get to the top of Google blogs, while other worthwhile coverage suffers. Here is a search link to the
